Habitat: Pacific coast of North America, from southern Alaska to northern California, grows on moist, damp, even swampy soils,
mostly slightly acidic, along river banks, in lowlands and shady forests on slopes, in rain-rich humid areas with cool summers and relatively mild winters.
In its native habitat, it neighbors Pinus monticola, Tsuga heterophylla. Pseudotsuga menziesii, Larix occidentalis. Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, Abies grandis and other conifers.
Form: Evergreen columnar tree, with a trunk going to the top, and horizontally raised and arched-vertical branches in the lower part of the trunk; very fast growing.
Size: 12-15 m. high and 3-5 m. wide. Annual growth in height 30 cm, in width 10 cm.
Needles: Shiny dark green, rough, strong, much larger than in the wild species, scaly, closely spaced.
Fruits: Cones oblong-ovoid, 12 mm long, green in summer, brown in winter.
Light: Shade-tolerant.
Soil: Grows on all fresh or moist, nutrient-rich, drained soils, from acidic to alkaline.
It is better to buy seedlings of thuja plicata 'Excelsa' in Ukraine (acclimatized) in a plastic container with fertilizers, so the plant is not subjected to digging with inevitable damage to the root system and after planting it is guaranteed to take root.
Features: Healthy and frost-resistant, tolerates urban conditions, tolerates pruning well, is wind-resistant.
