The prickly spruce "Glauca" is a medium-growth tree of regular conical shape. In the Rocky Mountains of America, namely in the states of Utah and Colorado, it reaches 30-45 m. In Europe, it became popular in the mid-19th century. In our climate, by the age of thirty it reaches 10-15 m. The prickly spruce has hard branches that grow at a right angle from the trunk. The bark is brown-red, cracks. The needles are very prickly, hard, sticking out on the shoots in all directions. The needles are tetrahedral, 2-3 cm long. The color of the needles of the prickly spruce has many different shades from green and blue-green to silvery and silvery-blue. The cones are drooping, 6-10 cm long. The wood is too soft and brittle, so the prickly spruce has no industrial value. The prickly spruce lives up to 500 years. It grows slowly. It is interesting that the Latin name of the spruce goes back to the Greek word "pissa" (Pissa), which means "resin". And although the spruce is less resinous than the pine, it was the one that received this name. The prickly spruce "Glauca" is more light-loving than other types of spruce, undemanding to soil, drought-resistant, has a high resistance to environmental pollution. For good growth of adult specimens, a natural litter of fallen needles is necessary. The prickly spruce "Glauca" is recommended for use as a hedge, as a solitary plant or for use in compositions. The prickly spruce "Glauca" is very loved by many landscapers, it can also be used as a New Year (Christmas) tree.
