The crown is conical, the branches are arranged in dense, regular tiers, horizontally or at a slight angle.

Height 10-20 m, width 6-8 m. The needles are blue with a steel tint, hard, very prickly. Prefers soils from relatively dry to fresh, well-drained, sandy-gravel or sandy loam, easily adapts. The root system is superficial, wide, sensitive to soil compaction and flooding. Winter-hardy.
