The prickly spruce "Glauca globosa" is a dwarf, broad-conical variety of prickly spruce.
The variety was bred in Boskoop from seeds in 1937. It grows slowly - about 10-15 cm per year. The first years of life, the prickly spruce "Glauca globosa" has a slightly flattened spherical crown, without a clearly defined trunk. Then (approximately at the age of 10-15 years) a leader shoot appears and the spruce turns from spherical into a triangular beauty. The maximum height, in our climate, reaches 3-5 m. The shoots of the prickly spruce are short, stiff. The needles are densely located on the shoots, silvery-blue in color, very prickly, not completely radial, slightly sickle-shaped, about 1 cm long. The cones are elongated, brown, hanging. The cones ripen and fall off in the first year. The prickly spruce "Glauca globosa" lives up to 500 years.
The prickly spruce "Glauca globosa" has low soil and moisture requirements. It is photophilous, winter-hardy, quite drought-resistant, resistant to smoke, gas, dust and soot.
The prickly spruce "Glauca globosa" is a very popular variety of prickly spruce in small gardens, it is also popular in the lower tier of coniferous-deciduous plantings, when creating voluminous rock gardens and even when creating borders.
