The tree is relatively fast-growing, with a beautiful weeping form, reaching about 10 m in height at the age of 30 years.
The needles are blue-green, the needles are very long (up to 20 cm), thin, collected in 5 pieces, characteristically drooping. The soil and moisture requirements are average. Due to its weak frost resistance, it is recommended for areas with a mild, warm climate. It is planted in parks and large gardens, in prominent places.
It was brought to Europe in 1823 by Lambert.
Habitat: an unusually decorative coniferous salad tree. Grows in humid and dry mountainous regions of the Himalayas, at an altitude of 1800 - 4000 m, where it coexists with Himalayan cedar and Himalayan spruce, forming vast and dense forests in Nepal, Northern Myanmar and western China.
Form: Evergreen large, very decorative tree. The crown is loose, openwork, broadly pyramidal, with horizontally spreading branches, in nature growing to the ground.
Size: 15 - 30 m, in its native land up to 50 m high and 8 - 20 m wide. Annual growth in height 35 - 60 cm, in width 15 - 20 cm.
Bark: Smooth, dark gray in youth, dark ash-gray with age, in cracks and with peeling plates.
Needles: The needles are very long, relatively thin, hang down on young shoots, 12-20 cm long. Collected in bunches of five, green with bluish-white stripes.
Fruits: Cones are vertical in youth, hanging down in the second year, cylindrical, 15-25 cm long, light brown, with numerous resinous drops.
Root system: Roots are strong, more or less flat - spreading.
Light: Light-loving.
Soil: Grows on all cultivated, even dry soils, develops optimally on sufficiently moist, fertile, well-drained substrates, from acidic to neutral.
It is better to buy Himalayan pine/Griffith pine seedlings in a plastic container with fertilizers, so the plant is not dug up with inevitable damage to the root system and is guaranteed to take root after planting.
Features: Freezes slightly in youth, conditionally tolerates the urban environment. Does not tolerate winds well, needs a place protected from wind and snow. Branches break under the snow, the wood is brittle, the tree does not live long.
Zone: 6b with proper care frost-resistant for the entire territory of Ukraine.
